Pigmentation refers to patches of skin that appear darker than the surrounding skin. It is common and usually not harmful, but many people want to understand it better.

Why dark spots appear

  • Sun exposure over time
  • Hormonal changes
  • Marks left after acne or skin injury
  • Skin type and genetics
  • Some medicines or products

Why assessment matters

Different kinds of pigmentation behave differently. A dermatologist can help work out what type you have before suggesting care, which may include topical medicines, sun protection and, in some cases, laser options such as Q-Switch or Pico.

Daily sun protection

Sun protection is commonly advised because sunlight can darken pigmentation or make it return. Your doctor can recommend what is suitable for you.

When to see a doctor

If a dark spot is changing in size, shape or colour, bleeding or itching, please have it examined promptly.
